The seven things people call to ask

How long does an exam take?

Fifty minutes for a first visit, thirty after that. Add fifteen if you are being fitted for contacts for the first time.

Will I be dilated, and can I drive home?

Dilation is once a year for most adults, and we do offer retinal imaging instead if you would rather not be. Dilated, you will be light sensitive for four to six hours. Most people drive home fine with sunglasses. If you would rather not risk it, book the last appointment of the day and bring somebody.

Can I use my vision plan and my medical insurance in one visit?

Usually yes, but they get billed separately, because they are covering different things. If you came in for new glasses and we find something that needs treating, that part goes to your medical plan and your medical deductible applies. We will tell you before we do it.

Do you see children, and from what age?

From six months. An infant exam takes twenty minutes, involves no reading, and is mostly lights and lenses held at arm's length. School-age children who are struggling to read the board should come in before the school screening, not after it.

I sat on my glasses. Can you fix them today?

Bring them in. Nose pads, screws, temple tightening and most solder-free repairs are done at the counter in about ten minutes and we do not charge for it, whether you bought the frame here or not. A snapped front usually cannot be saved and we will say so rather than sell you a repair that fails in a fortnight.

Something is in my eye. Do I go to the emergency room?

Call us first during office hours. We have the slit lamp and the anaesthetic drops, we can lift a metal fragment and a rust ring, and it costs a fraction of an emergency room visit. Chemical splashes are the exception: rinse for fifteen minutes and go straight to the hospital.

Do you do contact lens fittings?

Yes, including toric lenses for astigmatism and multifocals. A fitting is a separate charge from the exam because it is several appointments: trial lenses, a week of wear, then a follow-up to check the fit before the prescription is finalised.

If you have no insurance

Posted because people ask on the phone and nobody publishes it. Payment is due the day of the visit.

About two hundred frames on the board, from around $89 complete with single vision lenses. Single vision is usually ready in five working days, progressives in seven to ten. We will put your prescription in a frame you already own if it will take the lenses.
